The State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease (SKLRD) is the only state key laboratory in the field of respiratory disease research in China established in 2007 with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Since the approval of construction, we have won around 60 awards at various levels including the nation, the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City, including one for National Innovation Team of Scientific Progresses, one first prize (as a participant) and six second prizes (as a participant in two of them) in National Awards for Scientific Progresses and one for National Innovation Teams; one for the first event of “Southern Guangdong Meritorious Teams” hosted by the Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee; near 30 first, second and third prizes and prizes of excellence at the provincial and ministry levels. We have won approval for and led more than 920 projects at the levels of the state, province and ministry and prefecture city, including 430 state-level projects with a total fund of over RMB 700 million. We have published more than 2,300 SCI articles as the correspondence (or first) author unit in renowned medical journals at home and abroad, including around 180 with an IF of more than 10 points. We have been granted with over 330 granted patents, including 190 inventions, around 110 utilities and 20 computer and software copyrights.
Currently, the SKLRD has one National Respiratory Medicine Center, one National Clinical Medicine Center, one National Clinical Drug Test Facility, one Respiratory Medicine Engineering Laboratory of Guangdong, three Key Laboratories of Guangdong (the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Allergic Reaction and Immunity, the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Vascular Disease), one Research Center of Respiratory Disease and one United Laboratory of Infectious Respiratory Disease in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The SKLRD has facilitated the rapid development of respiratory science and related disciplines which it is based on, completed and owned one national key discipline (respiratory science), five key clinical specialties (respiratory medicine, intensive care medicine, allergic disease, oncology and thoracic surgery) and one national key discipline of the National Administration of TCM (clinical integration of Chinese and Western medicine). As a leader in the respiratory disease research in China, some research fruits of the SKLRD have ranked among the international advanced level. Our respiratory medicine department has ranked first in terms of technological value among hospitals in China for nine years in succession since 2014 and ranked first in the ranking of the specialties of hospitals in China organized by the Institute of Medical Management of Fudan University for 13 straight years. Our thoracic surgery department has ranked among the top five for technological value among the hospitals in China for five years in a row and ranked among the top six in the the ranking of the specialties of hospitals in China organized by the Institute of Medical Management of Fudan University for seven straight years, and ranked fourth in 2020. Our allergic reaction department has ranked among the top four in terms of technological value among the hospitals in China for eight successive years, ranked first in 2020 and ranked among the top three in the ranking of the specialties of hospitals in China organized by the Institute of Medical Management of Fudan University for four years in succession, taking the second place in 2020. Our intensive care department has ranked among the top two in the reputation ranking of South China in the ranking of the specialties of hospitals in China organized by the Institute of Medical Management of Fudan University for six years in a row, and ranked tenth in the reputation ranking of specialties of hospitals in China in 2017.
The Basic Research Department of the SKLRD occupies near 15,000 ㎡ and the Clinical Research Department occupies about 5,000 ㎡. The public platforms of the SKLRD include single-cell/sequencing (platform), biological information analysis platform, pathology center, precision medicine center and experimental animal center, equipped with cell energy metabolism analyzer, biomolecular interaction analyzer (BIACORE3000), fluorescence gel analysis system, Luminex liquid chip system, high performance liquid chromatography analyzer, mass spectrometer, laser confocal microscope, laser microcutting equipment, Flow Cytometer; fully automatic pathological section staining and analysis system; small animal respirator, small animal pulmonary function testing equipment, small animal in-vivo imaging system, small animal irradiator and small animal CT, around 80 sets of equipment priced over RMB 500,000 and with a value of over RMB 100 million, which can satisfy the demand of related research projects for large-scale equipment and platforms.
2. About the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation Project (Overseas)
In order to further perfect the talent support system of the Science Foundation, give full play to the function of the Science Foundation in the introduction and cultivation of talents and attract more outstanding youth talents back to work (in China) from abroad, the National Natural Science Foundation launched the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation project (overseas) in 2021.
The Outstanding Youth Science Foundation project (overseas) aims to attract and encourage outstanding young scholars overseas who have achieved good results in such areas as natural science and engineering technology (including non-Chinese descendant foreign talents) to come back to work (in China), choose their research orientations by themselves and carry out innovative research. The project also aims to promote the rapid growth of young science and technology talents, cultivate a batch of outstanding academic backbones that are expected to work in the world’s frontier of science and technology and contribute their strength to the building of China into a strong country of science and technology.
