广州国家实验室研究员、中山大学和广州医科大学特聘教授。1995年于德国布伦瑞克理工大学获得理学博士学位，1996-2002在芬兰赫尔辛基大学博士后、docent，2002-2016先后任武汉大学生命科学学院教授和副院长、武汉大学基础医学院教授、院长，长期担任武汉大学现代病毒学研究中心执行主任和主任、病毒学国家重点实验室副主任，2016.09开始任中山大学医学院教授、院长，为中山大学深圳校区医学院创院院长，2022年8月担任广州国家实验室研究员。先后获国家杰出青年基金、国家“973”项目（首席科学家），入选国家高层次人才计划领军人才项目、科技部人才推进计划重点领域创新团队带头人、湖北省医学领军人才（第一层次人选）、广东省医学领军人才（首批）、广东省“珠江人才计划”领军人才。目前兼任中国微生物学会副理事长、中华医学会医学病毒学分会常务理事、国家认可委实验室生物安全专业委员会委员以及Virology、Cell & Mol Immunol、J Medical Virol等学术期刊编委。主要研究RNA病毒感染致病机制和抗病毒药物以及干细胞抗病毒机理，发表学术论文200余篇，包括Nature Immunology、Science Translational Medicine、Cell、Cell Research、Lancet、PNAS、Hepatology、PLoS Pathogens等国际主流刊物，获得授权发明专利10余项，一款抗病毒药物完成III临床试验。
主要研究呼吸道RNA病毒的感染致病机制以及抗病毒药物，主要聚焦冠状病毒。具体研究包括冠状病毒非结构蛋白的功能以及在病毒复制和致病中的作用，包括参与病毒RNA加工修饰的蛋白，研发靶向病毒聚合酶和甲基转移酶的抗病毒药物；流感病毒感染重症发生机制与临床治疗策略。
